Iowa Cornets
The Iowa Cornets were an original franchise in the WBL, the first women’s pro basketball league. In fact, the Cornets were the first franchise in the WBL and can lay claim to being the USA’s first women’s pro basketball team. Their first signing naturally was Molly Bolin, who was from Moravia, Iowa. Many of the team’s players were from the state as the team tried to win over Iowans. They even played their home games in various places around the state – on purpose – to try and garner support. They would go 21-13 in their first season and make it all the way to the playoff finals before losing to Houston. In their second season, they had another successful year going 24-12, losing the title again this time to the New Jersey Gems. The team would be sold after the second season and went on hiatus. But as the WBL itself folded a year later, the Cornets would never return.
